The online community is run and supported by people who have had cancer. It is an online forum with over 80,000 members. Support is available 24 hours/day

Breast CANCER NOW

Breast Cancer Now is a national charity, which facilities a programme called ‘Moving Forward’. This helps you to move beyond your treatment. There is a group held regularly in Barnsley.  Follow the link below to either book a course online or speak to your Cancer Nurse Specialist or Macmillan Cancer Support Worker if you would prefer to speak to someone face to face.

Barnsley Hospital Chaplaincy Service

The team offers support to patients and their relatives whatever their faith or belief, whether religious or non-religious. Chaplains provide a supportive, confidential listening ear. You can contact them on 01226 435751.

The Barnsley Men's Shed

Project to create an environment which gives local men a space that will give you back your own working space and self-respect, which can come from the sense of being part of an active community.

Social prescribers

Are based within the community there are 27 and 2 at A&E. Their role is very diverse and can help support and signpost you to many different resources and services within the local area.

They can support people who are struggling with anxiety and finding it difficult to engage. 

They also run support groups for carers and the bereaved. These groups are to provide PEER support from people who have experienced the same things.

Health and Well-Being Coaches

Health and Well Being Coaches are based within your GP Practice. They have a varied role but are there to help support and signpost you to services that may help with identified concerns. More information about these can be found on the on-going follow-up section, which highlights for you all the teams within primary care that you may come across. Please bear in mind their roles and involvement in your care do vary per GP practice.

Local Choir

We Can Survive Singers are a group of local people who have been diagnosed and living with the effects of cancer.  We meet every Wednesday at 6 to 8 pm at St Pauls Church, Old Town Barnsley.

Cancer Buddies

Other Peer Support can come from Cancer Buddies who are a group of trained volunteers who have either had cancer themselves or have cared for someone with cancer. Because they have been in a similar situation, they can understand what it is like to deal with a cancer diagnosis as a patient or as a partner or family member.

Site specific support groups

There are many cancer groups running in the local area. Some are held at The Well others in other venues in Barnsley.

Please ask you health care team about them, so they can provide you with details about the meetings.

Some are run by health care professionals others by patients and carers.
